Research firm highlights Cognite’s contributions to Aker BP’s pursuit of operational excellence.
Independent oil and gas operator Aker BP has been awarded the 2020 Operational Excellence Innovation Award in the Oil & Gas Upstream category, presented by the independent research and consulting firm Verdantix.
The award recognizes companies across industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and utilities that have recently invested in innovative operational excellence technology projects.
Cognite has since 2017 been Aker BP’s main technology partner as the operator has pursued an ambitious digitalization agenda in order to increase efficiency and production and reduce downtime and waste.
“Aker BP is in the process of creating the oil installation of the future. Working with Cognite allows us to build on our vision which is to digitalize operations in order to increase productivity, enhance quality, reduce emissions, and improve the safety of our employees. We appreciate this recognition of our joint commitments,” said Karl Johnny Hersvik, CEO of Aker BP.

Specific examples of successes as a result of innovation include:
- A smart monitoring system that combines physics and domain knowledge to optimize produced water disposal.
- A dashboard that simplifies maintenance of process shutdown (PSD) valves.
- Access to data, documents, and 3D models of installations on mobile devices, which helps field workers quickly locate equipment and conduct inspections.
The other finalist in the Oil & Gas Upstream category, Saudi Aramco, is also working with Cognite on a number of projects related to digitalization and sustainability.
The winners of the 2020 Operational Excellence Innovation Awards were selected by two independent judges and announced on March 3 in London at the Verdantix HSE & OpEx Innovation Summit EMEA.
