TOKYO, Japan – September 10, 2025 – Tokuyama Corporation, a Japanese specialty and basic chemical manufacturer, and Cognite, the global leader in industrial AI, are pleased to announce that Tokuyama has adopted Cognite Data Fusion®, the leading industrial data foundation that makes data AI-ready, to accelerate digital transformation (DX) at the manufacturing sites. Through this collaboration, Tokuyama will increase the efficiency and sophistication of its equipment maintenance and operational management tasks.
Tokuyama is manufacturing a wide variety of products, such as chemicals, cement, and electronic materials. Tokuyama’s decision to implement Cognite’s solutions is a direct response to the complex challenges associated with modernizing its operations, including the need to ensure safety, maintain stable production, improve productivity, and facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge. The company’s existing data infrastructure, characterized by disparate and siloed systems for operational data, equipment records, and maintenance information, necessitated a robust solution capable of integrating these diverse datasets.
Following a comprehensive evaluation, Tokuyama selected Cognite based on three key criteria:
- Breaking down data silos: The ability to integrate and contextualize all types of data—such as equipment diagrams, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), sensor data, and inspection records—that are currently scattered across different departments. This creates an environment where operators and engineers can easily access and utilize data.
- High compatibility with existing systems: The platform's flexible connectivity with existing systems ensures a smooth implementation and operation.
- AI Agent Utilization: The utilization of AI agents with Cognite Atlas AI™ the only low-code industrial AI agent workbench to power agents with real-time, AI-ready operational technology (OT), information technology (IT), and engineering data. This contributes to the advancement of maintenance and operations by reducing the workload of data exploration, enabling the swift execution of analysis.
Moving forward, Tokuyama will advance the digitalization and automation of specific on-site operations, including visualizing equipment status, enhancing anomaly detection, and improving the efficiency of inspection tasks. The company aims to complete the implementation of Cognite’s solutions across all nine manufacturing departments at the Tokuyama Factory by March 2026.
Comment from Yasushi Okuno, Senior Managing Executive Officer, General Manager of Tokuyama Factory, Tokuyama Corporation:
"Since our founding, Tokuyama has focused on safely and stably providing materials of reliable quality. To build upon the operational and maintenance technologies we have honed over the years and transform into a more advanced operation, we are implementing Cognite . We expect that by creating an environment that dramatically improves the efficiency and effectiveness of data utilization and accelerating DX at our sites, we can evolve into a manufacturing environment where people and equipment work in harmony to maximize performance."
Comment from Yoshifumi Mori, General Manager, Equipment Diagnostics, Equipment Management Group, Tokuyama Corporation:
"We are striving to transform our business into a data-driven model with the goals of achieving 'unmanned night operation' (defined as operation with the minimum number of personnel required by the four security laws) and 'zero unplanned shutdowns' by fiscal year 2030. We expect Cognite to accelerate the realization of these goals and optimize our operations."
Comment from Ryoichi Egawa, President of Cognite Japan:
"We are deeply honored that Tokuyama has chosen Cognite to drive the DX of its manufacturing sites. I am confident that combining Tokuyama's extensive on-site data, cultivated over many years, with our industrial AI and data platform will significantly contribute to the efficiency and sophistication of their equipment maintenance and operational management. We look forward to partnering with Tokuyama and providing strong support for the establishment of data-driven manufacturing operations. We are excited to jointly lead the digital transformation of the Japanese manufacturing industry."
About Tokuyama Corporation
Tokuyama was established in 1918 in Tokuyama-cho, Yamaguchi Prefecture (now Shunan City), with the aim of domestically producing soda ash, which was heavily dependent on imports at the time. In addition to traditional basic materials like chemicals and cement, the company has expanded its business into advanced electronic materials such as polycrystalline silicon for semiconductors and high-purity IPA for the electronics industry, life sciences such as photochromic eyeglass lens materials and dental materials, and environmental fields including various recycling and ion exchange membranes.
